When we moved into our house last winter, we were presented with the conundrum of having no closet whatsoever in the bedroom.Β Who designs a home with no closet in the bedroom?! Argh!! I digress…
So, while I dream of having a closet one day that looks like this…
…for the time being I hadΒ to figure out how to work with this: an uglyΒ behemothΒ white plastic armoire left to us by the previous owners.
Whomp whomp. I knew that this had to go. Off to the dumpster it went.
With no room to build a walk-in closet, our only option was to install some sort of attractive-looking open shelvingΒ system. Though our clothes would have to be on display, I knew thatΒ it wouldn’t be such an eyesore if we kept it neat.
After looking at several closet companies, I finally settled on the Elfa Shelving System at the Container Store, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
BelowΒ is after we installed the Elfa system, but before we had lived with it for a few months. Notice carpet has not been installed and I have a vanity with a mirror and jewelry storage. The left halfΒ is mine, and the right halfΒ is hubby’s.
We chose to go with the white rack and light wood system, which I think looks great with the wall color, Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. As a housewarming present, my parents gifted usΒ matching woven bins to make the closet look streamlined and contain clutter like out of season scarves, camera accessories, and clutches. We also invested in matching huggable hangers and tossed out as manyΒ yucky plastic and drycleaner hangers as we could.
After living with the system for a few months, I decided that having a vanity area was a waste of space, and I needed a place to store my flat shoes. So I returned the vanity shelves (thank you Container Store for accepting the return after months and months!!), and replaced them with two gliding shoe racksΒ like my husband has on his side. I can’t tell you how amazing it is to have a proper place to storeΒ my shoes!
IΒ can’t believe I’m posting pictures of my underwear drawer online, but here is the after!
We love the ease of the Elfa system so much that I feel confident using it in any space that needs a storage solution in the future. Recently we decided to install it in our mudroom and pantry area, and I hope to be sharing more on that project once it’s done.
I hope you’re liking these home improvement posts! Have a great weekend!
